Appalachia Service Project (ASP)

Join a team of adults and high school students in the summer in doing hands-on home repair ministry to serve families in central Appalachia, making their homes safer, drier and warmer. Volunteers repair homes for low-income families. The goal is to make the homes safer, dryer and warmer. Since 1982, Anderson Hills UMC has sent over 1000 volunteers to central Appalachia with ASP. Click here for details of this year's trip.

Jackson, Ohio Area Ministries

Jackson Area Ministries (JAM) is a multi-sponsored church and community ministry located / serving the Appalachian counties of southeast Ohio. The focus of this ministry is to help persons who have lost jobs, who are senior citizens, and families on low income or a fixed income. They offer a garden/seed program every spring where the under-resourced are given plants and seeds to grow their own food. One of our Sunday School classes collects seed packets and monetary donations each year for additional support to this program. JAM also offers work camps for churches to send volunteers to work on housing improvements. Click here to read more about this ministry through the UM General Board of Ministries.

The Happy Church

The Happy Church is located near the city of Jackson, county of Breathitt, Kentucky. They are in the eastern coal field region of the Kentucky (Appalachia) which is the poorest region in the country. The Happy Church is a Christ centered ministry in the most impoverished area in the U.S. Not only do they feed the hungry, clothe the ill-clad, and help the hurting, they teach the young in music, drama, life skills, and more to build their confidence and abilities to break harmful patterns. With God, all things are possible! Visit the Happy Church website here.
